Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has revealed the reason behind skipping the ongoing season of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). The spinner expressed feeling “exhausted” after a demanding eight-month period of travel.
Earlier, Zampa was retained by Rajasthan Royals (RR) prior to the December 2023 IPL auction in Dubai for a sum of Rs 1.5 crore. However, shortly ahead of the beginning of the present season, the 32-year-old withdrew from the IPL 2024 season for personal reasons.
Now, Zampa has revealed the reason behind pulling out of the season. Zampa expressed that he was experiencing fatigue as a result of a busy summer schedule that included white-ball tours of South Africa, India, and New Zealand. Apart from participation in the Big Bash League (BBL), and involvement in a ODI World Cup campaign in India.

What Zampa Revealed
“There are several reasons why the IPL wasn’t for me this year. The most important one was the fact that it’s a World Cup year and I’m completely drained from 2023. I did the full IPL last year. Obviously, the World Cup was three months in India as well. So I had the best intentions of trying to play the IPL again this year,” Zampa revealed on the Willow Talkpodcast this week.
“But once push came to shove, I felt like I just couldn’t really offer the Rajasthan Royals the best version of myself and looking forward to the World Cup, that’s what’s more important to me,” he added.

Zampa was able to participate in only six matches for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023, achieving a total of eight wickets with an average of 23.50.
The Royals already have star spinners in Ravichandra Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal in their ranks. The duo’s presence also casted doubt on the number of games in which Zampa would have secured a spot in the Playing XI.
“It’s not like I can say to myself, ‘Well, that’s alright I’ve got 14 games to prepare for a World Cup. I don’t know whether that’s actually going to be two games or four games or six games. So I worked out that maybe putting my family first, putting my body first was better for me,” he expressed.
“It’s not an easy decision because you’ve always got that voice in the back of your mind going, ‘Pulling out of the IPL. What are people going to say? What happens the next time you want to go to the IPL? Do people kind of paint you with that brush? But I wasn’t too fussed about it once I made that decision, I knew it was the right one,” Zampa added.
